PS3 Impressions

December 27, 2007 - 8:08PM

So I went ahead and took the plunge to get a PlayStation 3 for myself with my Christmas bonus paycheck. I was hoping to find a 60GB somewhere but with that version out of production, it was a meager endeavor. So it looks like full backwards compatibility is out of the question. Oh well. I ended up getting the 40GB bundle at Costco which comes packaged with Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, a second Six-Axis controller, a Blu-Ray Remote and Spider-Man 3 on Blu-Ray. I also got (the last copy at GameStop) Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Here's my initial thoughts so far.

Spider-Man 3
Let's get the worst out of the way. This movie is TERRIBLE! I remember the morning after the midnight shows, the fans went insane with anger. Honestly, I have never seen such a negative reaction from a movie. After seeing the it, I completely understand. The movie is simply too cheesy, silly, over the top and soapy to be enjoyable. All I wanted was some awesome action scenes. All I got was Emo Pete, climactic forgiveness (?!) scene and multiple dance scenes...um no thanks.

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Everything you do in this game reminds me of some other game. The combat and cover system is almost exactly like Gears of War. The jumping and climbing is taken right out of Prince of Persia. But the thing is, none of this is a bad thing. All the parts in this game come together wonderfully and are better than the sum of their parts. The story is classic adventure. Think Indiana Jones in modern times. The voice acting is well done and the animation and production is top notch. All this adds up to my current favorite game that I can't get enough of.

Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
This game I've barely delved into, but I can tell you that the graphics are gorgeous. The game is LOCKED at 60 frames per second, so it is super smooth. The animations in the cut scenes and gameplay are excellent. Although I've never really been a R&C fan, I've always respected the developer, Insomniac. This will actually be the first R&C game I've owned and I intend to play through the whole game.

PS3 Hardware
I've heard a lot of negative things around the whole PS3 setup process, but mine went pretty smoothly. I was able to connect and update the system without a hitch. I also signed up for a Playstation Network Account. I've already download a few demos and am looking into what PS Store games are worth buying (I'm thinking, Calling All Cars and Stardust HD). Overall, I'm happy with the purchase.

Like the new digs? Good. Hopefully I'll update it more than once a year. :) Right now only the main page is up and running. I'll bring on the artwork sections of the page as it's done...hopefully that won't take too long. Still, it's more than I've done to this highly neglected piece of web space in years.

Halo 3
Okay, so just about all my free time in the last week and a half has been devoted to Halo 3 here are some quick thoughts I have on the game.

Campaign Mode: Very well paced with excellent level design. The AI are excellent shots (both allies and enemies) and smart in their overall battle tactics. Plus, the sense of scale is amazing. Some of the battles seem to have around 100 people fighting it out all around you. Overall it's definitely the best campaign of all three games and has a satisfying ending, as long as you stick around after the credits roll. Plus, there's 4-Player Online co-op for the campaign with the

Multiplayer: Check out my service record. The game plays great online. Lag has reared it's ugly head for me one time in 40+ matches. I'll take those odds. But the online is not surprising. What will really make this game last is the Theater and Forge. The theater mode allows for anyone to view a replay of a campaign level or multiplayer level. You can rotate the camera to any position and take screenshots and film clips. These can then be uploaded to Bungie.net for the entire community to download and share. All the screens you see are from my own games matches. The theater is my absolute favorite feature of the game. I find myself playing a couple of matches and then watching the replays for awesome screens and clips. The Theater has been confirmed as awesome when THIS hit the net. Unbelievable. Forge is really interesting as well. It's a map modifyer and games rules editor. Personally that's not my bag, but I can see that this will be big among the really hardcore.

So basically, if you have any interest in First Person Shooters, Halo 3 is simply a must buy. There are tons of options and endless replay opportunities between multi-player and online co-op. Buy it.
